If you've seen the Nintendo Wii commercials then you've heard the Japanese band, the Yoshida Brothers. The duo uses the ancient Japanese guitar called the shamisen and combines old school with new school. It's a really sweet mix. If you like groups such as Kodo, then you'll love these guys.

Phoenix "A Take Away Show"
Phoenix is a really cool new band that I thought I had posted about before but somehow forgot slipped through the cracks. Regardless, I'm doing it now and you all should know about them if you don't already. The group did a cool project for "La Blogotheque" called "A Take Away Show" where they perform randomly at various locations for unprepared audiences. It's really cool. I usually don't like acoustic versions of my fave songs, but in this case, it works for me. Here are a few clips from it.

Spike Jonze: Fatboy Slim
It's Tuesday and that means it's time for another facet of Spike Jonze. This feature is of him as a director of music videos, today's being for Fatboy Slim.

Jonze has an alter ego named Richard Koufey who is a leader of the dance troupe Torrance Community Dance Group. He recorded this video where he was dancing to Fatboy Slim's "Rockafeller Skank.":

Let the Wild Rumpus Start! A Tribute to Spike Jonze
We all know and love Spike Jonze (and if you don't, then there is no hope for you). Director, actor, and dancer extraordinaire, creating anything from commercials, to music videos, to documentaries and feature films; each of his works exude creative excellence. I'd like to tribute this week in his honor showcasing some of his projects. This Friday, "Where the Wild Things Are" debuts which is almost undoubtedly the most highly anticipated movie of all time, working closely with author Maurice Sendak for the past decade creating this masterpiece. To begin the week, here are some videos for WTWTA. So, let the wild rumpus start!

Birds on Wires
This is a very cool video...the creator took a picture of these birds on a wire and decided to creat music based off the notes it creates.
"Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.
I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper.
Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

Laura Ling and Euna Lee's first statements after N. Korea Capture
American Journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee's statements pending their arrest have been posted on Current.com.
Video Thank-You:
This article excerpt is taken from Current.com (Current.tv):
LAURA LING AND EUNA LEE MAKE FIRST STATEMENT REGARDING EVENTS LEADING TO CAPTURE
Hostages in the Hermit Kingdom
While covering human trafficking between North Korea and China, two American journalists wound up becoming the story.
We arrived at the frozen river separating China and North Korea at 5 o'clock on the morning of March 17. The air was crisp and still, and there was no one else in sight. As the sun appeared over the horizon, our guide stepped onto the ice. We followed him.
We had traveled to the area to document a grim story of human trafficking for Current TV. During the previous week, we had met and interviewed several North Korean defectors, women who had fled poverty and repression in their homeland, only to find themselves living in a bleak limbo in China. Some had, out of desperation, found work in the online sex industry; others had been forced into arranged marriages. Now our guide, a Korean Chinese man who often worked for foreign journalists, had brought us to the Tumen River to document a well-used trafficking route and chronicle how the smuggling operations worked.
There were no signs marking the international border, no fences, no barbed wire. But we knew our guide was taking us closer to the North Korean side of the river. As he walked, he began making deep, low hooting sounds, which we assumed was his way of making contact with North Korean border guards he knew. The previous night, he had called his associates in North Korea on a black cellphone he kept for that purpose, trying to arrange an interview for us. He was unsuccessful, but he could, he assured us, show us the no-man's land along the river, where smugglers pay off guards to move human traffic from one country to another.
When we set out, we had no intention of leaving China, but when our guide beckoned for us to follow him beyond the middle of the river, we did, eventually arriving at the riverbank on the North Korean side. He pointed out a small village in the distance where he told us that North Koreans waited in safe houses to be smuggled into China via a well-established network that has escorted tens of thousands across the porous border.
Feeling nervous about where we were, we quickly turned back toward China. Midway across the ice, we heard yelling. We looked back and saw two North Korean soldiers with rifles running toward us. Instinctively, we ran.

It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
It's been a while since I've posted, sorry, I had a friend's wedding to attend, as well as working two jobs. So tiresome. I've also been rather pensive and in some weird moods lately, but, when in need of relaxation, Regina Spektor is a good choice, with a soothing piano, a beautiful voice, and a fun quirkiness. She recently released a new album out called "Far." Check out the music videos from it for the songs entitled "Eet" and "Laughing With."

Gogol Bordello
It's been a while since I've brought you guys more music that I enjoy. If you've ever seen "Wristcutters: A Love Story" (which if you haven't, you need to see), then you're familiar with the group Gogol Bordello. My friends went to Van's Warped Tour and discovered these guys and then showed me. They're like a band of musical Russian pirates or something who make amazingly fun music.(Apparently it's classified as "gypsy punk" but I hate gypsies so I'm not calling it that :-p). The name originated from Nikolai Gogol, a man who smuggled Ukrainian society into Russia, and Bordello, meaning "gentleman's club." The first song I heard by them was "Start Wearing Purple," so I'll start with that song.

Making Rooms with Ikea
I can't wait to get my own place so I can start buying stuff to decorate and make it my own. Strange thinking about how expenditures go from buying dumb pointless things like videogames and other stuff to more adult things like room decor. Anyways, Ikea is one of the places I'm sure to shop at when the time comes and they've made a really cool way to browse with the "Space Maker." You can create your own room from scratch with Ikea stuff. It even keeps a price tally to show you how much everything you've used will cost. It's really cool. Check it out if your bored. So today turned out to be pretty badass. The weather brought upon a terrible storm (which made traffic at TJ Maxx slow, huzzah!" Well my friends pulled up and ran thru the rain, so I thought i'd watch and laugh. They walked in right behind them across the street a lightning bolt hit a transformer and KABOOM! Giant explosions, fire and electricity everywhere. I was like, omg, that's amazing. I'm going to call 911 now. Response time: 15 mins...damn. It's elementary school picture day, that means it's time for LASER PORTRAITS!!!
You forgot it was picture day? You mean your not dressed up for it? Well, it's ok, because neither did 90% of the other kids. Today, it's time to pay tribute to the best thing to come out of grade school. That's right, the laser portrait. You know what I'm talking about. Picture day, when you walk in with whatever your mom put you in (if you remembered it was the day), your done up nineties hair (mine was the classic chilibowl, complete with big dorky glasses), all propped up infront of, a lazer backdrop. Oh how I miss the 90's. The website laserportraits.net brings back the hilarity that was elementary school picture days.

And the Chicago Bulls windbreaker? Classic.:

Futuristic cars of today
Remember those old episodes of Looney Tunes with the Cars of the future? One had a compartment waaaay in the back for that naggy mother-in-law. Well, here are some really cool vehicles that appear to be from the future.
Code X Yacht - This comes complete with touch screen control, a Kevlar/carbon shell with phototropic-shaded screens and windows and a GPS-controlled virtual anchor system that utilises the electric motors to maintain a stationary position regardless of wind or currents.:
Samsom Motorworks Switchblade - How awesomely funny would it be to drive past one of these on the highway, then it just decide to capriciously take off out of nowhere? On the ground it can reach speed of 90 mph on wheels and 134 mph when airborne. It can also travel 880 miles on ground and 340 miles in the air. The Switchblade is supposed to become FAA certified and available in early 2010.
2009 Fornasari Buggy - This is build out of special steel piping chassis in molybdenum-chrome with 450 pipes running across to maintain the stiffness and torsion, while weighing just 150kgs. Zero to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, topping out at 174mph.
Hybrid Seven Roadster - Where are the cushioned seats? And what about the dashboard!? Who knows, who cares. Created by designer Eric Stoddard, the roadster is made of structural foam panels, sandwiched between layers of carbon fiber, with a projected weight under 450kg.
And finally, check out this sweet concept, the CarGo by designer Adam Schacter. It goes from "Smart car" to mini-truck. So cool.
...But where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars...

Letterman v. Palin: Round 1
Apparently David Letterman the other night had made some off-handed jokes about Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin and her daughters while visiting New York City. The Governor got very upset and had some comments in response. Check out the hilarious (two-faced maybe?) retort given by the Ball State Alum. Chirp Chirp!
"Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes.
Did I suggest that it was ok for her 14 year old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No. *Smiles*"
