Paris is burning!?

What is it with burning cities that artists love so much? Ohwell, I don't care, because the songs are usually good. Ladyhawke's "Paris is burning" is a terrific example of this. Ladyhawke is a New Zealand artist whose music is straight from the 80's. Synth and electro all around, with a beautiful captivating voice. It's really fun music. Think "Cars" by Gary Newman meets the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (hell, the music vid for "Paris is burning" is similar to "Zero").

Throwback Thursday: Dinosaurs

"Not the Mama!" That's right, for today's Throwback Thursday, I bring unto you, "Dinosaurs." It's essentially "Family Matters," except in the stone age. The dad, yeah, straight up Carl. Earl, ha! Not fooling us. But, I loved "Family Matters," so ofcourse I love "Dinosaurs." The show is available on DVD too.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz

A few months ago, the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album "It's Blitz" came out. I just got a hold of it and it's pretty good. You might remember the song "Maps" from a few years back (it's also on Rock Band and fun as hell to play). I suggest you check it out. They were on the cover of "Spin" a few months ago. Here are a few tracks from the new cd:

Funny Faces

This is a really cool caricature sculpture artist I found. The likenesses are hilarious, and ontop of that, they are sculptures too! It's by an artist named David O'Keefe. His works have been seen on Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Mad and Time. He's also done work in advertising too for clients such as Coca-Cola and Waffle House.

David Bowie (read last entry for more on Bowie):

5 Things you probably didn't know about David Bowie:

5.) His real name is David Jones (to not be confused with Davy Jones).
4.) He went to school with Peter Frampton.
3.) His right pupil is permanently dilated because when he was young, he got into a fight (over a girl).
2.) David Bowie is also a renowned painter (he also played in "Basquiat" as Andy Warhol). Check it out at Bowieart.com.
1.) He's not all glam rock!

David Bowie is probably my favorite musician. Funny story though, no one knows of his later career. Sure in the 70s it was all glam rock, but later he found a new sound. This is the time period I like best of his. In the 90's he had a more contemporary electronic rock feel. No skin tight spandex or face paint here guys. So to get the word out there and hopefully spread my enjoyment, here are a few of my favorites of his from the last 10-15 years.

"Dead Man Walking" My favorite song, period. (Side note, this song was in the movie "The Saint." It was played on Val Kilmer's cd player):

"Jump They Say" I want a suit like this:

"Survive" (cool a surreal video):

"Little Wonder" (weird, but still cool)":

"Never Get Old" (from his newest album "Reality"):

Your Mod Spot

I am both pumped and excited for this. Let me introduce the new AAF aggregator blog, yourmodspot.blogspot.com. This is the "aggroblog" bringing together all of my BSU chapter's AAF members blogs into an easy-to-access blog. Just open it up and bingo, there ya go. Not only are mine there, but so are many of my friend's. This is going to be a fun way for us to keep in touch and see what's on everyone's minds as we continue through college and as we move away.

Throwback Thursday

So I'm going to be a little late with this post, but I want to do it anyway. I'm starting a new segment. It's a redone version of "Remember when?" This segment will be called "Throwback Thursday." It'll be the same idea, where we'll reminisce about great things from our childhood. So to begin, and because I'm crunched for time trying to get this post in before noon so it constitutes as a Thursday post...it's time for the greatest game of our youth...remember kids, don't get caught up in the...CROSSFIRE!!!!

Drawn!

Hey guys, so today, this is going to be a blog about a blog. The site is Drawn!. This is an awesome blog full of creative work, from cartoons, to paintings, to drawings. There's something for everybody. Here are a few things I've found of interest to me that were posting in the last few days:

The power, is yours!

Yes, it is only on this special day that we as individuals have the ability to plant a tree or care about the plamet and the environment. It's time to go save the world..then forget about it tomorrow.

Just kidding, but, you get the idea. Sustainable actions should be a part of all our daily lives. I'm not sure how (and definately not thru my own doing, being away from my apartment as much as humanly possible), we managed to get a letter telling us that our apartment room had used the most electricity last month in the entire complex. That is just terrible, and I think I know who to blame.*cough cough ratdog* Sorry for the tangent. Anywho, there is a really cool movement that started up the last few years that you should check out. It's "Earth Hour." Across the globe, for one hour, an entire city shuts down. Check out the website and the video below:

Royksopp

Royksopp has released a new music video from their new cd "Junior." It's for the song "Happy up Here," and features really cool neon signs, soon turning into space invaders. It's a really sweet music video and a really sweet song too. For those who don't know, Royksopp is an electronic duo from Norway who's music you've probably already heard. The song "Remind me" was in a Geico caveman commercial. Generally their music videos are really trendy and interesting. I'll post a couple more for you as well. Check these guys out for a chill relaxing experience. It's great for studying, especially with finals coming up.

Find your voice

My friend introduced me to a new reality show on MTV called "Taking the Stage." My first thoughts were skeptical, I mean it is MTV. But, i said ok, and we watched it. I was really surprised and taken away by it. The show centers around five students at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, a prestigious school for gifted students wishing to pursue the entertainment business. It's part dance, part music, part drama with interests ranging from ballet, to hip-hop, to rock.

There are only five episodes on thus far, and they can all be viewed on MTV.com. I just caught up. I've embedded the first episode below for you to view. If you like music, and you like dance, then you should check this out. It's not just your traditional reality tv show like Laguna or the Hills. This show depicts the struggles and the drive to prove yourself and make your dreams come to fruition. The show airs Thursdays at 10 pm ET/PT.

Down the rabbit hole

The imagination is a wonderful thing, and one of my favorite movies/books/stories of all time is a prime example of this. Alice in Wonderland is a work that has inspired and entertained me as a child. It's so magical and fun, sometimes creepy and awkward, but, anything can happen. Here is a remix I found recently that uses mostly sounds from the Disney movie.

More can be located here, and downloaded for free. I love all versions of it. From the classic Disney cartoon, to the one with the girl from "Carina, Carina," to the tv show "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.' Yeah, you remember that one, with hip-hop dancin Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb. So find your rabbit hole and explore your imagination.

Remember when? Game shows

Well guys, I leave tomorrow for an advertising competition, so I'll give you something to make it through until the final post on Saturday for this tribute. Today's will be about the network's awesome gameshows, complete with all the memorable hosts (why so much Mark Sommers!?!?). And the great prizes, from Ratchtechs, to a Schwinn, or the elusive trip to space camp!

Remember when? Doug and Hey Arnold!

Next on the list for my favorite Nickelodeon tv shows is the football head himself, Arnold..wait, what's his last name? "Hey Arnold!" is the show that really made me want to live in the city. Also, I'll be out of town Thursday, so today and tomorrow I'm doubling up. Also on this post is Doug Funnie. Not that junk Disney version. Well, I'll have to admit, I was just glad it came back on. I enjoyed One Saturday Morning for what it was worth.

Wait a minute..apparently Hey Arnold!, Doug, AND Rocko's Modern Life came out on dvd last year and I didn't know it!? how is this possible!? I guess they're Amazon exclusives. Time to charge both seasons of Rocko!

Ok, so, I don't think words can describe what to think about these things...This might be my new favorite artist. His name is Li Wei and his work is a stunning combination of performance art and photography. None of this is photoshopped. He does however use trick photography as well as props such as mirrors, metal wires, scaffolding and acrobatics. Just...wow...

Remember When? Rocko

This is the official kickoff to Nickelodeon week on Running With Scissors. Next up is everyone's favorite kangaroo, I mean, wallaby, Rocko. This is easily my favorite Nick cartoon. It was so random and so fun, at times even pretty risque (no idea how to spell that). Here's some clips from "Rocko's Modern Life."

Happy Easter from the boys in grey

Not to be too insensitive about today, but I love the Ghostbusters and this is always good for a chuckle. Figured this was topical for today's post. Check back tomorrow as I start the week of Nickelodeon goodness (I'm sure the "All That" kick-off/preview got you all sorts of excited). Well fellow readers, have a Happy Easter!

Remember when?

From now until next Saturday, this blog will be filmed in front of a live studio audience at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida. This is a new segment called "Remember when?" It will occur spontaneously throughout the life of this blog and will contain videos that bring you back to when life wasn't complicated, but so fun and so innocent. The only worry being what you would get from the ice cream man, or Mr. Swirly or the Jolly Olly Man or Mr. Tastee...that's right, if you hadn't guessed already, I'm kicking things off big. I've decided to dedicate this entire week to Nickelodeon. I know, you love me, right? So without further adieu, here's this segment's first tv show...

Fresh out the box. Stop, look, and watch. Ready yet, get set. It's All That!

RIP! Follow-up: Colbert Remixes

Instead of making an edit to my old post, I'll just make a new one. Here are the videos of the Colbert Report remixes that were created, featured, and commented by Colbert himself, then taken, and remixed, into their own remix...These were created by the Eclectic Method

"Go to hell" - David Ford

This is a really cool music video I just found. The song is "Go to Hell" by a musician named David Ford. In the video he starts playing a piece of the song on an instrument, queus it up then it continues to stream. He then moves to the next instrument and plays its part which then streams as well...He does this one after another while moving around in his apartment. It's almost exactly how I play with Garage Band, except executed visually. Check it out:

Rip

In a response to my friend's blog ConcreteThought, I will now inform you guys of an awesome documentary about remixes and the fight for fair use and the 1st Ammendment. It stars Girl Talk who everyone should check out also. The documentary is called "Rip: A Remix Manifesto" and can be viewed online for free.

The end is golden, and has a remix of a Steven Colbert interview where he says he doesn't want the interview remixed. Funny story, immediately after watching the Colbert video I found on youtube, the following video was pulled by Viacom due to copyright infringement, hahahahaha!

Working for a Nuclear Free City

I recently discovered a UK band called Working for a Nuclear Free City. They're music is awesome. The cd entitled "Businessmen & Ghosts" reminded me of tracks that would be perfect for commercials and montages (you know, the ones that make commercials really cool, to the effect of any Postal Service song). These aren't official videos, and I have yet to learn how to post mp3's to Blogger, so just enjoy the music ^^

"Kingdom"

"Je Suis le Vent"

Then this one, that sounds like something straight from "Myst."

R.I.P.

I loved the throwback to Tokyo Drift in the new Fast & Furious movie. It was surprisingly good. I decided to finally get around to watching the entirety of the first Fast and the Furious movie, and it was pretty good. The second however, not so much. Three, awesome, cuz I love Japan and I love drifting. RIP Han...

Dancing Kids

So I think kids that can dance are one of the coolest things ever. They used to be in music videos everywhere. Here are a few examples why. I wish I could dance...

We all remember that little white girl from the Missy Elliot videos, aka, the girl from Mike's Super Short Show...Missy Elliot n' Luda's "Gossip Folks":

Then there's a Japanese group called the Polysics and in it is the daughter of a Japanese dancer called "Strong Machine," thus her nickname "Strong Machine 2"...Polysics "I Me Mine (Strong Machine 2 Version):

Tenori-On

So I love music, and music games, and techno, and dance music, and anything really with an awesome beat. No country though. GTFO country. But, my friend showed me this new gadget called the Tenori-On. It's a handlheld musical instrument from the future using lights and sound to create music. I want one! But, it's only about 2000 US dollars. More information can be found here (as well as some mp3s if you like what you hear): http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/index.html

And, the Tenori-On in action:

Booty, more important that food

You've all seen it, you all love it. The only thing that would make this better is if it were done by John Stossel. Oh him and his crazy mustache. I bring unto you, Fleece Johnson. Watch yourself, and dammit, pull ur pants up.
