Blood pudding??? Not here! Just good old Icelandic music. Retro Stefson is a new band I just discovered from Iceland, and no it's not Sigur Ros (though they are amazing too!) The average age of the band members? Just under sixteen. Bangin' bass, funky guitars, and two keyboards? How can I not like them? These kids know how to make some fun dance music! The League of Extraordinary Dancers!

If you could have any one superpower, what would it be? Flight, telekenesis, super strength? What about, the power of DANCE! I bring you, the LXD, the League of Extraordinary Dancers! Haha, that's right, this is an actual web series by the creators of Step Up 2 and 3D. Imagine "Heroes" + "You Got Served." From B-boys to pop-and-lock to tapdancing, this show covers it all. It sounds goofy, and it is, but dammit if it isn't awesome and entertaining!

Episodes from season one, "The Uprising Begins" can be found at on Hulu. For those of you with Netflix, the entire season can be found in full-length feature movie format. Check out one of my favorite episodes as it gives instruction on how to be noticed by the LXD for possible recruitment.

Help stop the hate

It saddens me how many young children have recently felt they must find an escape through suicide just because they are gay. I'm not gay, but I'm not ignorant either. People can be cruel. Polaris Prize Music Awards

As per my last post, I've told you I watched the Polaris Prize Music Awards. I discovered a lot of great new music I want to share with you all. It was a great show, with ten of Canada's best albums of the year being represented by each respective band playing a set. The way it works is there was a "long list" consisting of 40 albums, then that was condensed to the "short list" of 10. The artists featured on this elite list were the Broken Social Scene, Karkwa, Radio Radio, Dan Mangan, Shad, The Sadies, The Besnard Lakes, Caribou, Owen Pallett and Tegan and Sara. Karkwa won the Polaris Prize. You can watch the rerun online this Saturday or download it as a podcast today. Here are a few of my new faves:

"Texaco Bitches" - Broken Social Scene:

"Sold" - Dan Mangan (They've got a Mumford and Son's feel):

"Echapper au Sort" - Karkwa (French MuteMath maybe?):

"Forme Elliptique" - Radio Radio (French/English/Gypsy rap? yes please!):

Then ofcourse Owen Pallett..."Lewis Takes Off His Shirt":

And who should have won, Tegan and Sara..."The Ocean" (clip from the show, beautiful!):

Tegan And Sara on the Polaris Prize Music Awards

So I watched the Polaris Prize Music Awards for the first time last nite and it was amazing. 10 stellar bands performing a two song set list leading up to the winner of "The Best Canadian Album of the Year." Some of the candidates include the Broken Social Scene, Owen Pallett, and ofcourse Tegan and Sara. The girls' performance was easily one of the best ever, doing an acoustic set of "Alligator" and "The Ocean." There was a special treat though, Owen Pallett supported them playing violin. I'm pretty sure it was a last minute addition when the girls met him in the back. It was beautiful...

Owen Pallett, the real Final Fantasy

I definitely just fell in love with the music of Owen Pallett, aka Final Fantasy. I mean, check this performance of "Lewis Takes Off His Shirt." Not only is it a terrific song, he tells the stage crew he's wants to finish the song as they try to get him to stop due to the rain!

Owen Pallett (Once known as Final Fantasy), is a Canadian artist who is a composer, violinist, keyboardist, and vocalist. His newest album "Heartland" is truly special. Check it out and you will soon see what I mean. I've discovered that his music is great to not only listen to, but also to do things to...such as read a book or clean a room to. It's beautiful and upbeat, with a certain mysticism about it. The following video is the first song I heard of his and is from an older record called "He Poos Clouds." (Hehe). How did I find him? A podcast by Tegan Quin of Tegan and Sara, haha. I know, I'm kinda obsessed with them at the moment :-p. (PS: Today's their 30th birthday)

I love the original and I love each of these! Watch the original here.

Tegan and Sara

I've been hooked on Tegan and Sara for a while now. They came to Indy and I'm upset I missed them, ohwell, maybe next time. Anywho, Tegan and Sara are an indie rock/pop duo from Canada. The music has a wide range, from quirky and punk, to deep and melodic. And yes, they are twins, but they are oh so different. Not only do I enjoy their music, I find them to be very interesting people. It's not common for me to watch five hours of videos and interviews of someone :-p. They've produced six albums and a few movies too. Their newest album dropped last year and was entitled "Sainthood." I hope you find them as enjoyable and inspirational as I do. Also, check out some of their interviews on youtube for much humor and insight!

My First Concert: Tokyo Police Club, Arkells and the Freelance Whales

At age 23, I've finally made it to my first concert. That's right, it took me 23 years, and what? But, it's safe to say I finally understand the hype in going to them. I recently attended a concert at the Vogue headlining Tokyo Police Club, with opening bands Arkells and the Freelance Whales. The openers were surprisingly good! So I'm going to share with you the bands I saw last nite.

Arkells is a rock band from Canada. They were pretty rockin', too bad there was only one guy dancing to them. Anyways, I hadn't heard of them until this point, but I'm definitely glad I have now.

"The Boss is Coming":

"Pulling Punches"

Next up were the Freelance Whales. This group was interesting. I mean, they had a girl, what!? Not only this, but they did have a xylophone, a banjo, a harmonica, a synthesizer, and some dude playing his guitar with a violin string. They followed the high energy Arkells which I figured would be an odd transition, but they managed to rock out on the xylophone pretty hard (think a drum solo, but on one of these!).

"Generator 2nd Floor"

"Hannah"

After these two great openers finally came the Tokyo Police Club. I didn't like live music in concert would be this amazingly different, but damn was it awesome! Bright lights, loud drums, rockin guitars. Who knew they had it in em? I actually first learned about them on a Nike shoes website that one of my professors pulled up in class! Glad this man loved his Nike's. Well, the Tokyo Police Club just came out with a new album called "Champ" and I suggest everyone go out and grab a copy!

"Your English is Good"

From Champ, "Breakneck Speed"

"In a Cave"

All said and done, my first concert was a great success and I will definitely being going to more now in the future!

Kicking the, kicking the, kicking the ball! We are Scientists attempt for England's World Cup anthem

The band We are Scientists have decided to write an anthem for England's world cup national team. Read their tips on how to create one here.

"The football anthem occupies a genre all of its own. It must delicately balance patriotic spirit, jovial sportsmanship and a lack of delicacy. Artists including New Order, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles have entered the maze and found their way out the other side. Others – such as Madonna, U2 and the Beatles – have notoriously crashed on the rocks, ending promising careers and spending decades wandering along pop music's abandoned outer banks. The latest big success story is, of course, us. Here's how we did it." (Continued)

Jukebox Collective

Sit down Animal Collective, you and your ostentatious indie asshole selves...it's time for Jukebox Collective. This is a band I discovered through a French Axe ad surprisingly. This English group is another band that fuses together indie rock with great synth. If you like LCD Soundsystem and/or the Rapture, you're sure to like Jukebox Collective.

Here is their mathematical equation that is the Jukebox Collective:
K + G = KG
KG + (dr x M) = D
D + KG + J + N = Jukebox Collective”

“Kev (K) and Greg (G) knocked out some demos (D) in Gregs bedroom in 2008. Informal drinks (dr) and music making (M) evenings at most."

Their second single "Icon Parade" drops soon...so be on the lookout for an EP and full album!

I've gotta buy me a Janelle Monae Android!

I've gotta buy me a Janelle Monae android! (See "Many Moons" video below)

This is Janelle Monae (or her alter-ego, Cindi Mayweather). She's got the dance vibe of Outkast, and it's crazy cool! Good luck not dancing while you listen to the video for "Many Moons" (complete with the Haitian from "Heroes!"). She fuses indie pop and soul and it's just straight up fun. Part big band, part soul, part hip hop, and all around classy. Muscian, dancer, songwriter, actor, she's got it all. Originally from Kansas, she moved to New York to pursue a career on Broadway, but decided to go back to music. Good thing too because she gave the world amazing music. Another fact about Monae is that she founded the Wondaland Arts Society in Atlanta with other young artists. And you know how I said it's got that Outkast vibe, well she also starred in "Idlewild" alongside Big Boi and even recorded a track with him ("Tightrope" below). Her newest album, "The ArchAndroid" just dropped, so go buy it and enjoy! (Also, I just loooove the hair!)

Moon

If you have Netflix you should check out the movie "Moon" starring Sam Rockwell ("Galaxy Quest" and "Hitchhiker's Guide"). Rockwell plays Sam Bell who has signed a three year contract to harvest Helium-3 on the moon for Lunar Industries. His only companion is a computer system named Gwerty who is voiced by Kevin Spacey. The movie takes place within his last two weeks before returning home to be with his wife and daughter where he begins to lose his sanity, or so he thinks. Things take a twist as he learns more about what he is doing there. This was a phenomenal movie that I wasn't expecting. I've always liked Sam Rockwell but he really shows his acting prowess here. Another factoid is this movie was directed by Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie.

Check out the trailer:
